What do Various Nutrients do for our Body?

Nutrients are substances found in food that our bodies need to function properly. They help with growth, energy, and maintaining health.

  • Carbohydrates: These are the body’s main source of energy. They provide fuel for daily activities and brain function. Examples: rice, bread, and pasta.
  • Proteins: Important for building and repairing body tissues, including muscles. They are essential for growth and development. Examples: meat, eggs, and beans.
  • Fats: Provide energy and help absorb certain vitamins. They protect organs and help keep the body warm. Examples: butter, oil, and nuts.
  • Vitamins: Help regulate body processes, such as boosting immunity and keeping skin healthy. Each vitamin has a specific role. Examples: Vitamin C (found in citrus fruits) boosts the immune system, while Vitamin D (from sunlight and milk) helps with bone health.
  • Minerals: Support various body functions, including bone health, muscle function, and nerve signals. Examples: Calcium (for strong bones) and Iron (for healthy blood).
  • Water: Essential for all body functions. It helps with digestion, keeps the body hydrated, and regulates body temperature.

Eating a variety of foods ensures we get all the necessary nutrients in the right amounts for good health and energy.

  • Not getting enough of a nutrient can lead to health problems (e.g., lack of Vitamin C can cause scurvy).
  • Consuming too much of certain nutrients, especially fats and sugars, can lead to weight gain and other health issues.

Though not considered a nutrient, fiber aids digestion and prevents constipation. It helps maintain a healthy digestive system.
