Is it a polygon?

🎈 A polygon is a closed figure with straight sides. A closed figure starts and ends at the same point.
  1. Straight Sides: Polygons are made up of straight line segments, called sides or edges, that connect to form a closed shape.
  2. Closed Shape: The sides of a polygon must connect to form a closed path, with no gaps or open ends.
  3. At Least Three Sides: A polygon must have at least three sides. Shapes with fewer sides (such as two sides) are not considered polygons.

  1. Are all the sides straight?
    • If any side is curved or not straight, the shape is not a polygon.
  2. Is the shape closed?
    • If the sides do not form a closed loop (they don’t all connect back to each other), the shape is not a polygon.
  3. Does the shape have at least three sides?
    • If the shape has fewer than three sides, it is not a polygon.

  • Triangle: Has 3 straight sides and is closed. (Yes, it is a polygon)
  • Square: Has 4 straight sides and is closed. (Yes, it is a polygon)
  • Rectangle: Has 4 straight sides and is closed. (Yes, it is a polygon)
  • Pentagon: Has 5 straight sides and is closed. (Yes, it is a polygon)
  • Circle: Has a curved side and is closed. (No, it is not a polygon)
  • Line segment: Has only 1 side and is not closed. (No, it is not a polygon)

Learn with an example

  • yes
  • no
  • This figure is not a polygon. Although it is closed, it does not have straight sides.
  • yes
  • no
  • This figure is not a polygon. It is open, not closed, and it does not have straight sides.
  • yes
  • no
  • This figure is a polygon.
