Is it a polygon?
Key Notes :
🎈 A polygon is a closed figure with straight sides. A closed figure starts and ends at the same point. |
A polygon is a flat, two-dimensional shape that has the following characteristics:
- Straight Sides: Polygons are made up of straight line segments, called sides or edges, that connect to form a closed shape.
- Closed Shape: The sides of a polygon must connect to form a closed path, with no gaps or open ends.
- At Least Three Sides: A polygon must have at least three sides. Shapes with fewer sides (such as two sides) are not considered polygons.
Based on these characteristics, to determine if a shape is a polygon, you can ask the following questions:
- Are all the sides straight?
- If any side is curved or not straight, the shape is not a polygon.
- Is the shape closed?
- If the sides do not form a closed loop (they don’t all connect back to each other), the shape is not a polygon.
- Does the shape have at least three sides?
- If the shape has fewer than three sides, it is not a polygon.
Examples:
- Triangle: Has 3 straight sides and is closed. (Yes, it is a polygon)
- Square: Has 4 straight sides and is closed. (Yes, it is a polygon)
- Rectangle: Has 4 straight sides and is closed. (Yes, it is a polygon)
- Pentagon: Has 5 straight sides and is closed. (Yes, it is a polygon)
- Circle: Has a curved side and is closed. (No, it is not a polygon)
- Line segment: Has only 1 side and is not closed. (No, it is not a polygon)
