Properties of multiplication

✈️ Distributive property:

  • You can multiply a sum by multiplying each addend separately.
  • The distributive property works with subtraction, too.

✈️ Commutative property:
You can multiply numbers in any order and get the same product.

Learn with an example

(m − n) · p = m · p − n · p

  • distributive
  • commutative
  • zero
  • associative
  • (m − n) · p = m · p − n · p
  • This equation shows the distributive property. Multiplication distributes over addition or subtraction.
  • (n · p) · q = n · (p · q)
  • 0 = n · 0
  • n · p · q = r
  • r = n · p · q
  • (n · p) · q = n · (p · q)
  • This equation shows the associative property. The grouping of the factors is changed.

7 · 4 = 4 · 7

  • zero
  • commutative
  • identity
  • distributive
  • 7 · 4 = 4 · 7
  • This equation shows the commutative property. The order of the factors is changed.
