Find start and end times

Learn with an example

🔔 Ann went to the playground. She played on the swings for 30 minutes and went on the slide for 1 hour. It was 6:30 P.M. when Ann left the playground.

  • 7:30 P.M.
  • 5:00 P.M.
  • 5:30 P.M.
  • 6:00 P.M.
  • Add the times to find the total elapsed time.
  • 30 min + 1 h = 1 h 30 min
  • Now find 1 hour and 30 minutes before 6:30 P.M.
  • Count back by hours to find 1 hour before 6:30 P.M. This is 5:30 P.M.
  • Now subtract 30 minutes from 5:30 P.M. This is 5:00 P.M.
  • Ann arrived at the playground at 5:00 P.M.

🔔 Martin started playing a video game at 9:00 A.M. It took him 2 hours and 30 minutes to beat the first level and 2 hours and 30 minutes to beat the second level. Martin played the final level for 2 hours and 30 minutes and finished the game.

Include A.M. or P.M. in your answer (for example, 11:58 A.M.)._____

  • Add the times to find the total elapsed time.
  • 2 h 30 min + 2 h 30 min + 2 h 30 min = 7 h 30 min
  • Now find 7 hours and 30 minutes after 9:00 A.M.
  • Add 7 hours to 9:00 A.M. This is 4:00 P.M.
  • Now add 30 minutes to 4:00 P.M. This is 4:30 P.M.
  • It was 4:30 P.M. when Martin stopped playing the game.

🔔 Danielle is going on a hike to the top of a mountain. It will take 3 hours to hike up the mountain and 1 hour to hike back down. If Danielle wants to finish the hike by 1:00 P.M.

  • 12:00 P.M.
  • 2:00 P.M.
  • 12:30 P.M.
  • 9:00 A.M.
  • Add the times to find the total elapsed time.
  • 3 h + 1 h = 4 h
  • Now find 4 hours before 1:00 P.M.
  • Count back by hours to find 4 hours before 1:00 P.M. This is 9:00 A.M.
  • Danielle should start the hike by 9:00 A.M.
