Identify equivalent ratios

  • A ratio is a comparison of two quantities.
  • It is written in three ways:
    • Using a colon (e.g., 2:3)
    • As a fraction (e.g., 2/3)
    • In words (e.g., “2 to 3”)

  • Equivalent ratios are ratios that represent the same relationship between two numbers.
  • They are similar to equivalent fractions.

  • By Multiplication: Multiply both terms of the ratio by the same number.
    • Example: 2:3 → Multiply by 2 → 4:6
  • By Division: Divide both terms of the ratio by the same number.
    • Example: 6:9 → Divide by 3 → 2:3

  • Divide both numbers in the ratio and compare their values.
  • Example :

  • A ratio table helps list multiple equivalent ratios by multiplying or dividing.
    • Example for 2:5

  • Cooking Recipes: If a recipe needs 2 cups of flour and 3 cups of sugar, doubling it gives 4 cups of flour and 6 cups of sugar (2:3 = 4:6).
  • Maps and Scale Models: A map may use a 1:100 ratio, meaning 1 cm on the map represents 100 cm in real life.

  • Use cross multiplication to check equivalency:
    • Is 3:4 equivalent to 6:8?
    • 3×8=4×6
    • 24=24 ✅ Equivalent
