Write a ratio

  • A ratio is a comparison of two quantities.
  • It tells how much of one thing there is compared to another.

  • Using a colon (:) → Example: 3:4
  • As a fraction (/) → Example: 3/4
  • Using the word “to” → Example: 3 to 4

  • Part-to-Part: Compares two parts of a group (e.g., boys to girls in a class).
  • Part-to-Whole: Compares a part of a group to the total (e.g., boys to total students).
  • Whole-to-Whole: Compares two separate groups (e.g., students to teachers).

  • Divide both terms by their greatest common factor (GCF).
  • Example: 6:8 → Divide by 2 → Simplified ratio: 3:4

  • Multiply or divide both terms by the same number to find equivalent ratios.
  • Example: 2:3 → Multiply by 2 → 4:6 (Equivalent)

  • Cooking recipes (e.g., 2 cups of flour to 1 cup of sugar).
  • Comparing distances, prices, or speeds.

  • Identify the two quantities to compare.
  • Write the ratio in the required format (colon, fraction, or “to”).
  • Simplify if needed.

  • Reversing the order of comparison (e.g., apples to oranges vs. oranges to apples).
  • Not simplifying the ratio when possible.
