Compare and order integers

  • Integers include all whole numbers, both positive and negative, as well as zero (e.g., -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3).
  • Integers do not include fractions or decimals.
  • Use a number line to visualize integers.
  • The left side of the number line represents negative integers, while the right side represents positive integers.
  • Zero is in the middle and acts as the dividing point.
  • To compare two integers, determine their position on the number line:
    • The integer that is further to the right is greater.
    • The integer that is further to the left is smaller.
  • Symbols used for comparison:
    • Greater than (>): e.g., 3 > -1
    • Less than (<): e.g., -2 < 2
    • Equal to (=): e.g., -1 = -1
  • When ordering integers, list them from least to greatest or greatest to least.
  • For example, to order the integers -2, 3, 0, and -5 from least to greatest:
    • -5, -2, 0, 3.
