Graph integers on horizontal and vertical number lines
key notes:
🥏Positive integers are to the right of 0. 🥏Negative integers are to the left of 0. |
An integer is a number without a fractional part. Integers can be positive, negative, or zero. All whole numbers are integers. Here are some examples of integers:
–42, –2, 0, 3, 180
Numbers like 3.5 and –12 are not integers. They have fractional parts.
You can write the set of integers like this:
{…, –3, –2, –1, 0, 1, 2, 3, …}
Integers on number lines
You can plot integers on number lines. On a number line, negative integers are to the left of zero, and positive integers are to the right of zero.
Let’s try it. Plot 2 on the integer number line. The integer 2 is positive, so it is to the right of zero.
Let’s try it for another example. Plot –4 on the integer number line. The integer –4 is negative, so it is to the left of zero.
Learn with an example
Graph 4 on the number line.
Find 4 on the number line. 4 is positive, so it is to the right of 0.
Graph the point.
Graph 5 on the number line.
Find 5 on the number line. 5 is positive, so it is to the right of 0.
Graph the point.
Graph –3 on the number line.
Find –3 on the number line. –3 is negative, so it is to the left of 0.
Graph the point.
