Add and subtract fractions with like denominators

  • Fractions have like denominators when the denominator (the bottom number) is the same for both fractions.
  • Example: 3/7 and 2/7 have like denominators (7).
  • When adding fractions with like denominators, you add the numerators (the top numbers) and keep the denominator the same.
  • When subtracting fractions with like denominators, you subtract the numerators and keep the denominator the same.
  • After adding or subtracting fractions, check if the resulting fraction can be simplified.
  • Step 1: Make sure the fractions have the same denominator.
  • Step 2: Add or subtract the numerators.
  • Step 3: Write the result with the same denominator.
  • Step 4: Simplify the fraction if possible.
