Convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers
key notes:
1. Understanding Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers:
- Improper Fraction: A fraction where the numerator (top number) is greater than or equal to the denominator (bottom number). For example, 7/4 or 9/5.
- Mixed Number: A number that consists of a whole number and a proper fraction. For example, 1 3/4 or 2 1/2.
2. Converting Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers:
- Step 1: Divide the numerator by the denominator to get the quotient (whole number).
- Step 2: The remainder becomes the numerator of the fraction part.
- Step 3: Write the whole number with the fraction.
Example: Convert 7/4 to a mixed number:
- Divide 7 by 4: 7 ÷ 4 = 1 with a remainder of 3.
- The mixed number is 1 3/4.
3. Converting Mixed Numbers to Improper Fractions:
- Step 1: Multiply the whole number by the denominator of the fraction.
- Step 2: Add the numerator of the fraction to the result.
- Step 3: Write the result as the numerator of the improper fraction and keep the denominator the same.
Example: Convert 2 1/3 to an improper fraction:
- Multiply the whole number (2) by the denominator (3): 2 × 3 = 6.
- Add the numerator (1): 6 + 1 = 7.
- The improper fraction is 7/3.
