Almost everyone knows what stress feels like: a tight throat, a clenched jaw, trouble concentrating. On a physical level, whenever your body perceives a threat in the nearby environment (whether that threat is a friend with whom you’ve had an argument or a lion on the savannah), it releases more of certain hormones, such as cortisol and adrenaline. As a result of the increase in these hormones, the body devotes less attention to functions like digestion and more attention to keeping muscles in a state of tension, ready to fight if they need to.
