A decimal number consists of a whole number part and a fractional part, separated by a decimal point.

Example: 2.75 (whole number: 2, fractional part: 0.75).

A mixed number has a whole number part and a fractional part.

Identify the Whole Number

  • Look at the digits before the decimal point.
  • This becomes the whole number part of the mixed number.
  • Example: In 2.75, the whole number is 2.

Extract the Fractional Part

  • Take the digits after the decimal point as the numerator of a fraction.
  • The denominator is a power of 10 based on the number of decimal places (1 decimal place = 10, 2 decimal places = 100, etc.).

Simplify the Fraction

  • Reduce the fraction to its simplest form by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD).

Combine the Whole Number and Fraction

  • Write the whole number and the simplified fraction together as a mixed number.
